The Relationship Between Food Intake of Protein and Vitamin C Sources with the Wound Healing Process of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the Diabetes Center, Ternate City

Abstract

Type II diabetes mellitus is one of metabolic diseases with the symptom of regular occurence of hyperglycemia particularly after eating, due to lack of insulin production or insulin resistant in several cells. Ternate is a city in Maluku Utara Province with the highest prevalence of diabetes among cities and districts in  that province. The prevalence of diabetes in Ternate was 2.9%. Various study has shown that adequate fruits and vegetables intake can maintain normal blood glucose and cholesterol. The content of fiber in fruits and vegetables can positively affect blood glucose in type II diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to analyse the association of fruits and vegetables intake with blood glucose in type II DM patients. This is an observational analytical study with cross sectional design. Simple random sampling was used to select 45 patients as the respondents. In those with inadequate vegetables intake, there were 17 respondents (94.4%) with hyperglycemia and 1 respondent (5.5%) with normal blood glucose. Whereas, in those with adequate vegetables intake, there were 13 respondents (48.1%) with hyperglycemia and 14 respondents (51.8%) with normal blood glucose. Statistical analysis of chi square shows significant association with  p-value 0.001 (<0.05). In those with inadequate fruits intake, there were 13 respondents (56.5%) with hyperglycemia and 10 respondents (43.5%) with normal blood glucose. Whereas, in those with adequate fruits intake, there were 17 respondents (72.3%) with hyperglycemia and 5 respondents (22.7%) with normal blood glucose. The result of chi square analysis shows no significant association with p-value 140 (>0.05). Conclusion: Intake of vegetables was associated with blood glucose of type II DM patients, while intake of fruits was not associated with blood glucose of type II DM patients in Diabetes CenterTernate City.
